Types of Points & How to Enroll

Lesson 2 of 19•10 min•By Austin Nguyen•Updated Oct 16, 2026

Flexible points (Chase Ultimate Rewards, Amex Membership Rewards) transfer 1:1 to airlines/hotels. Airline miles and hotel points are fixed-currency programs. Always enroll in loyalty programs BEFORE booking to earn points.

Key Takeaways

  • ✓ Flexible points (Chase, Amex, Capital One, Citi) transfer to multiple partners
  • ✓ Airline miles are fixed currency (Southwest, United, Delta)
  • ✓ Hotel points are fixed currency (Hyatt, Marriott, Hilton)
  • ✓ Enroll in loyalty programs BEFORE booking to earn points
  • ✓ Enrollment is free and takes 2 minutes per program

What Are Flexible Points?

Flexible points (also called transferable points) can be converted 1:1 to multiple airline and hotel loyalty programs. The four major flexible point currencies are:

  • Chase Ultimate Rewards (UR): Transfers to United, Southwest, Hyatt, Air France/Flying Blue, British Airways, and 9 other partners. Earned with Chase Sapphire Preferred, Chase Sapphire Reserve, and other Chase cards. See full transfer partner list.
  • Amex Membership Rewards (MR): Transfers to Delta, Air Canada, Virgin Atlantic, Hilton, Marriott, and 16 other partners. Earned with Amex Platinum, Amex Gold, and other Amex cards.
  • Capital One miles: Transfers to Air Canada, Turkish, British Airways, and 15+ partners. Earned with Capital One Venture X and Venture cards.
  • Citi ThankYou Points (TYP): Transfers to Air France/Flying Blue, Turkish, JetBlue, and 15 other partners. Earned with Citi Prestige and other Citi cards.

Why flexible points are valuable: You can transfer to whichever program has the best award availability or value for your trip. If United doesn't have space, try Air Canada. If Hyatt is sold out, try Marriott.

What Are Airline Miles?

Airline miles are fixed-currency points earned and redeemed within a single airline's loyalty program. Major programs:

  • Southwest Rapid Rewards: Earned flying Southwest or with Southwest credit cards. Redeemed only on Southwest flights. Learn about the Southwest Companion Pass (covered in Lesson 10).
  • United MileagePlus: Earned flying United or Star Alliance partners, or via United credit cards. Redeemed on United and Star Alliance partners.
  • Delta SkyMiles: Earned flying Delta or via Delta credit cards. Redeemed on Delta and SkyTeam partners.
  • American AAdvantage: Earned flying American or via American credit cards. Redeemed on American and Oneworld partners.

Advantage of airline miles: You can earn miles by flying, even without credit cards. Status bonuses multiply earnings.

Disadvantage: Miles are locked to one airline. If that airline has no award availability, you're stuck. (Exception: Most airlines allow redemptions on partner airlines within their alliance — covered in Lesson 13.)

What Are Hotel Points?

Hotel points are fixed-currency points earned and redeemed within a single hotel loyalty program. Major programs:

  • World of Hyatt: Earned staying at Hyatt properties or via Hyatt credit cards. Best value among hotel programs. See our Hyatt points guide and Lesson 15.
  • Marriott Bonvoy: Earned staying at Marriott, SPG, Ritz-Carlton properties or via Marriott cards. Largest hotel portfolio (30+ brands).
  • Hilton Honors: Earned staying at Hilton properties or via Hilton cards. Frequent transfer bonuses from Amex.
  • IHG One Rewards: Earned staying at IHG properties (Holiday Inn, Intercontinental) or via IHG cards. Often high welcome bonuses.

Advantage of hotel points: Award nights often have better value than airline miles (1.5-2.5 cents per point vs 1-1.5 for airlines).

How Do I Enroll in Loyalty Programs?

Enroll BEFORE booking your first flight or hotel stay. If you fly or stay without a loyalty number on your reservation, you won't earn points retroactively (or it requires calling customer service).

How to enroll (takes 2 minutes per program):

  1. Go to the airline or hotel's website (e.g. Southwest Rapid Rewards enrollment, United MileagePlus enrollment, World of Hyatt enrollment
  2. Click "Join" or "Enroll"
  3. Enter your name, email, and create a password
  4. Save your loyalty number (you'll need it when booking)

Enrollment is always free. There are no fees or commitments. You don't need to fly or stay to keep your account active (though some programs expire points after 18-24 months of no activity).

Which Programs Should I Enroll In First?

Start with programs you're most likely to use based on your travel goals (from Lesson 3):

For domestic U.S. travel:

  • Southwest Rapid Rewards (if flying Southwest)
  • United MileagePlus (largest U.S. route network)
  • World of Hyatt (best hotel value)

For international travel:

  • Air France/Flying Blue (transfers from Chase, Amex, Citi, Capital One)
  • British Airways Executive Club (short-haul awards)
  • World of Hyatt (global footprint)

Best practice: Enroll in all major programs as you encounter them. It takes 2 minutes per program, and you never know when you'll need them. Many people have 10-20 loyalty accounts.

Next Steps

Now that you understand the types of points, it's time to pick your first trip (Lesson 3) and learn about credit scores (Lesson 4) before applying for cards.
