Maui on Points, Step by Step
This is the March 2026 Maui trip, rewritten from the accounting table in the walkthrough notes. Two people, Salt Lake City to Maui, five nights. The table's cash paid is $51.20. Flights used Southwest Companion Pass. The hotel used World of Hyatt points, including a transfer from Chase Ultimate Rewards.
What was booked?
The flights were Southwest from Salt Lake City to Kahului. Person one used 14,200 Rapid Rewards points each way, 28,400 points round trip. Person two used the Companion Pass and paid $5.60 each way, $11.20 in taxes. The notes list the cash range Southwest was showing as $340 to $420 per person, and the accounting table uses $840 for both people.
The hotel was the Andaz Maui at Wailea. The trip notes book it at 25,000 World of Hyatt points a night, 125,000 points for five nights, and they call that a Category 6 award. Andaz Maui at Wailea is a Category 8 hotel. This page keeps the 25,000 point price from the notes and does not substitute a Category 8 price. Austin needs to confirm the award price against the trip notes. The travelers already held 60,000 Hyatt points and transferred 65,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards at 1:1 before booking. The notes say the cash rate was $840 a night, or $4,200 for the stay. Dividing that cash rate by the points used is this booking's price, not the monthly value of a Hyatt point. World of Hyatt is 1.65 cents per point (The Points Guy, October 2026). Chase Ultimate Rewards is 2.05 cents per point (The Points Guy, October 2026).
The car was $340 for five days through Costco Travel. The card data for that credit says: $300 Capital One Travel credit The table counts $40 left as cash after the credit.
How did the cash and points add up?
| Expense | Cash value in the notes | Points | Cash paid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flights, both people, round trip | $840 | 28,400 Southwest points | $11.20 |
| Andaz Maui, 5 nights | $4,200 | 125,000 Hyatt points (65,000 transferred from Chase) | $0 |
| Car rental | $340 | None | $40 |
| Total in the accounting table | $5,380 | 153,400 points | $51.20 |
The draft's opening line says the out-of-pocket total was $24.80. The accounting table in the same notes says $51.20, which is $11.20 in Southwest taxes plus $40 after the Venture X credit. This page uses the table.
What order did the booking use?
The notes say to confirm the hotel before transferring Chase points, because the transfer to Hyatt is one way. They also say the Companion Pass is what made the second seat $5.60 instead of another 14,200 points each way. Without that pass, the same itinerary needs a different flight plan. The Companion Pass 2027 guide covers the rules that start January 1, 2027, which are not the rules this 2026 trip used.
Chase points moved only after the Andaz award was available. The Ultimate Rewards hub lists which cards earn those points and which ratios Hyatt uses now. Sapphire Reserve still transfers at 1:1. Sapphire Preferred and Ink Business Preferred transfer at 4:3. This trip's notes used a 1:1 transfer.

Key takeaways
- Companion Pass made the second flyer $11.20 round trip instead of another 28,400 Southwest points.
- The hotel was 125,000 Hyatt points, with 65,000 of those transferred from Chase at 1:1.
- Use the accounting table: $51.20 cash, not the draft's $24.80 opening line.
